FILM

The Legend of the Black Cat, is a feature film from director Clébio Viriato, intended to display in movie theathers and digital theather circuit in Brazil and abroad.

The film excels in recognizing the force of the universe of Gypsy culture and its contribution to the formation of the Brazilian Cultural Identity. The movie will respect the differences of ethnic minorities, recognizing the legacy that Gypsies (those who passed the northeastern hinterland in the last century) left to future generations.

As a result it is expected to reach an estimated audience of two million people among cinephiles, remnants of the Gypsy community, young and old, men and women from social classes A, B and C in Brazil and abroad.

Why a movie about gypsies? Unlike the Indians, also a minority, the Gypsies are not even mentioned in the Brazilian Constitution. The defense of Gypsies rights and interests, however, is much more difficult and complex, because the literature on Gypsies in Brazil is very small and barely a dozen scientific papers, because of the near absence of anthropologists and other scientists who conducted or conduct field research on Brazilian gypsies.

Gypsies are the least known minority, and perhaps thats the reason they are still victims of prejudice and discrimination in Brazil. The research part of this movie was based on the orality of gypsy groups living near Juazeiro and Sobral, Ceará.

The Gypsy Culture is a set of traditions and beliefs that challenge social models for defending the right to difference. Gypsies throughout history are witnesses to the social and religious prejudice, exactly why not recognize a God, nor priests, nor unique services. They face many prejudices. For city dwellers, gypsy is often synonymous with smart, bum, or thief. This history is grown stale, even the literature around stories and lived or imagined stories. Like jews, indians, blacks, or the poor, gypsies are discriminated against in society. This film will address discrimination, forbidden love, honor and dignity.

The Legend of the Black Cat will focus on aspects of Gypsy culture and contrasts with the social morals of the 70s to the present day, so that society understands its value and keep the determination to preserve nomadic culture.

The film also has as a motivational motto an urban legend of the city of Quixadá, inside the Brazilian Northeast, which tells the story of a girl who climbed the steepest part of the Stone Cross, 90 feet high, without the aid of any equipment and said it was a black cat that led her up to the top of the stone.
